Tai Chi for the Equestrian: Reva Seyboldt, Woodstock, CT

"At 60 plus years old, after a year of Tai Chi I feel Tai Chi cross Training for Equestriansmuch safer around my horses because I am both more flexible and stronger than I was 10 years ago. In riding and driving, my hands are much better coordinated and responsive to my horse and with my seat. Practicing Tai Chi has increased my ability to coordinate my Center with the horse's when riding or driving, which greatly improves my/our training and fluidity of movement. Learning to move from Center has had a calming effect on the horse in groundwork and makes me effective in moving him when I need to."

This program is one of only two of its type to be offered in Eastern CT.  View/Download Registration  No other therapeutic tai chi for fall prevention program for seniors in Eastern CT has the validating science behind it.

Instructor Laddie Sacharko has been program certified by the senior  researcher, Fuzhong Li(Phd, Physical Therapy), who studied tai chi and developed this tai chi fall prevention program for the Oregon Research Institute.    Li’s study was funded by the US government in its efforts to curb falling as a chronic health challenge to older Americans.

More than any other preventable cause, falls cause more older adults in Connecticut to lose their independence and be placed in nursing homes.

  • How big is the problem?View/Download CTDPH Fact Sheet

    • In Connecticut, falls are the leading cause of injury-related death for Connecticut residents aged 65 years and over and the fourth leading cause for all ages.
    • Falls resulted in approximately 6,000 inpatient hospital stays and 24,000 emergency room visits among older Connecticut residents each year from 2005 to 2008.
    • In addition to being the leading cause of hip fractures among older adults, falls are also the leading cause of traumatic brain injury and a leading cause of earlier admission to a nursing home.
    • Costs for hospital stays due to falls for older adults totaled $273 million from 2005 to 2006, not including the costs of long-term care or rehabilitation.

  • Studies show that a combination of measures can significantly reduce the risk of falling, and increasing awareness of the key measures that older adults can take to reduce their risk is important.

  • The Department of Public Health recommends the following actions to help prevent falls:

  •  Begin a regular exercise program such as therapeutic tai chi for fall prevention, especially one that increases balance, strength, and flexibility.
  • Consult with a health professional about getting a fall risk assessment.
  •  Have all medications, prescription and over-the-counter, reviewed periodically for interactions that could lead to falls.
  • Get vision checked at least annually by an eye doctor.
  • Make your home safer by reducing tripping hazards, installing handrails and grab bars, and improving lighting.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Little is known in the United States about those who practice t’ai chi and qigong, two mind-body techniques that originated in Asia.

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this study is to characterize use of t’ai chi and qigong for health with regard to sociodemographics, health status, medical conditions, perceptions of helpfulness, and disclosure of use to medical professionals.

METHODS:

We analyzed associations of t’ai chi and qigong use for health using cross-sectional data from the 2002 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) Alternative Medicine Supplement (n = 31,044). The 2002 NHIS estimated the number of t’ai chi and qigong users for health to be 2.5 and 0.5 million persons, respectively. We collapsed t’ai chi and qigong use into a single category (TCQ) for analysis, representing 2.8 million individuals.

RESULTS:

We found that neither age nor sex was associated with TCQ use. TCQ users were more likely than nonusers to be Asian than white (odds ratio [OR] 2.02, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.30-3.15), college educated (OR 2.44, 95% CI 1.97-3.03), and less likely to live in the Midwest (OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.42-0.96) or the southern United States (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.36-0.72) than the West. TCQ use was associated independently with higher reports of musculoskeletal conditions (OR 1.43, 95% CI 1.11-1.83), severe sprains (OR 1.65, 95% CI 1.14-2.40), and asthma (OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.08-2.10). Half of TCQ users also used yoga for health in the last 12 months. Most TCQ users reported their practice to be important to maintain health, but only a quarter of users disclosed their practice to a medical professional.

CONCLUSIONS:

In the United States, TCQ is practiced for health by a diverse population, and users report benefits for maintaining health. Further research is needed to establish efficacy and safety for target populations, including those with musculoskeletal and pulmonary disease, as well as for preventive health.

Eight one hour tai chi for seniors sessions are geared towards the senior(65+).Beginners of all ages will benefit from an hour of relaxation, breathing, and moving. Warm-up exercises gently work the body while relaxing the mind. Deep, diaphramatic breathing oxygenates the blood and stimulates a pleasant feeling of well-being. Joint rotation exercises help manage arthritis pain. New research shows Tai Chi class helps manage fibromyalgia pain. This tai chi class consists of ten simple movements. These tai chi movements  are practiced during this seniors tai chi class for their ability to train balance, flexibility, and increase tolerance for exercise.

Program: One hour class is held weekly, Fridays 9:15-10:15 Canterbury Community Center. 8 Weeks

A person practicing in tai chi class moves her body in a slow, relaxed, and graceful series of movements. One can practice on one’s own or in a group. The movements make up what are called forms (or routines). Some movements are named for animals or birds, such as “White Crane Spreads Its Wings.” The simplest style uses 13 movements; more complex styles can have dozens. The term “tai chi” has been translated in various ways, such as “internal martial art,” “supreme ultimate boxing,” “boundless fist,” and “balance of the opposing forces of nature.” While accounts of the art’s history often differ, the most consistently important figure is a Taoist monk (and semi legendary figure) in 12th-century China named Chang San-Feng (or Zan Sanfeng).

Tai Chi Teacher Laddie Sacharko has been organizing and delivering tailored tai chi instruction in CT since 1998.

If you are considering or using any type of (Complementary or Alternative Medicine) CAM, talk to your health care provider about it. This is for your safety and a complete treatment plan.
