Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Fibromyalgia (FM), one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders, is associated with high levels of impaired health and inadequate or limited symptom relief. The cause of this complex syndrome is unknown, and there is no known cure. Numerous research results indicate that a combination of physical exercise and mind-body therapy is effective in symptom management. T’ai Chi, an ancient Chinese exercise, combines physical exercise with mindbody therapy.

PURPOSE:

To investigate the effects of T’ai Chi exercise on FM symptoms and health-related quality of life.

DESIGN:

Pilot study, one group pre-to-post posttest design.

METHODS:

Participants with FM (n = 39) formed a single group for 6 weeks of 1-hour, twice weekly T’ai Chi exercise classes. FM symptoms and health-related quality of life were measured before and after exercise.

FINDINGS:

Twenty-one participants completed at least 10 of the 12 exercise sessions. Although the dropout rate was higher than expected, measurements on both the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) (Buckhardt, Clark, & Bennett, 1991) and the Short Form-36 (SE-36) (Ware & Sherbourne, 1992) revealed statistically significant improvement in symptom management and health-related quality of life. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING RESEARCH: Knowledge of interventions to enhance health for the patient with musculoskeletal problems is a National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses priority. Tai Chi is potentially beneficial to patients with Fibromyalgia . Further research is needed to support evidence-based practice.

“More than any other preventable cause, falls cause more older adults in Connecticut to lose their independence and be placed in nursing homes.”

For Additional Information: Cindy Dainton, Director, Mansfield Senior Center: 860 429 0262, or Laddie Sacharko,Program Director/Instructor, Starfarm Tai Chi: 860 455 0353

This evidence based, therapeutic tai chi fall prevention program is recommended by the CDC. It was proven through years of scientific research to reduce the rate of falls among older adults by 55%! In its first update of the American Geriatrics Society and the British Geriatric Society’s guidelines on preventing falls in older persons since 2001, this year AGS/BGS recommended “multifactorial interventions which include exercise for balance, gait and strength training, such as Tai Chi or physical therapy.”

The Mansfield Senior Center sponsored Tai Chi Fall Prevention Classes will be offered 3 times weekly for 16 weeks, the recommended protocol for achieving results. You may register for twice weekly for 16 weeks, the minimum required as program protocol, and you may register for 1 class weekly, “tai chi a la cart”, or wellness program (does not meet requirements as “fall prevention program”; instead tai chi for seniors mansfield ct).

Part of the program protocol is functional balance testing before and after training; participants will know exactly what their efforts have achieved, and can document for their Primary Care Provider the results of a formal fall prevention program. Current plan calls for physical therapy students completing their academic preparation at the University of Connecticut to conduct these measurements. The data will be reviewed with a statistical analysis and the results published as a study as a part of these students’ training completion requirements.

Registration is limited, enroll early.

This Tai Chi Moving for Better Balance program is one of 14 Fall Prevention programs recommended by the CDC, and the tai chi program protocol used in this training presentation.

This protocol “represents a significant enhancement of traditional Tai Chi transforming the purposeful movements into therapeutic training of balance.” The protocol consists of a standard set of tai chi exercises and movement practiced over a specified period of time (16 weeks), with a specific frequency (min 2x weekly), using pre and post testing of participants with functional tests.

Functional outcomes include better movement excursion and control, and consistent, steady walking patterns:

improved postural stability

improved control of body positioning

improved gait initiation

improved movement symmetry and coordination

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Little is known in the United States about those who practice t’ai chi and qigong, two mind-body techniques that originated in Asia.

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this study is to characterize use of t’ai chi and qigong for health with regard to sociodemographics, health status, medical conditions, perceptions of helpfulness, and disclosure of use to medical professionals.

METHODS:

We analyzed associations of t’ai chi and qigong use for health using cross-sectional data from the 2002 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) Alternative Medicine Supplement (n = 31,044). The 2002 NHIS estimated the number of t’ai chi and qigong users for health to be 2.5 and 0.5 million persons, respectively. We collapsed t’ai chi and qigong use into a single category (TCQ) for analysis, representing 2.8 million individuals.

RESULTS:

We found that neither age nor sex was associated with TCQ use. TCQ users were more likely than nonusers to be Asian than white (odds ratio [OR] 2.02, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.30-3.15), college educated (OR 2.44, 95% CI 1.97-3.03), and less likely to live in the Midwest (OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.42-0.96) or the southern United States (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.36-0.72) than the West. TCQ use was associated independently with higher reports of musculoskeletal conditions (OR 1.43, 95% CI 1.11-1.83), severe sprains (OR 1.65, 95% CI 1.14-2.40), and asthma (OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.08-2.10). Half of TCQ users also used yoga for health in the last 12 months. Most TCQ users reported their practice to be important to maintain health, but only a quarter of users disclosed their practice to a medical professional.

CONCLUSIONS:

In the United States, TCQ is practiced for health by a diverse population, and users report benefits for maintaining health. Further research is needed to establish efficacy and safety for target populations, including those with musculoskeletal and pulmonary disease, as well as for preventive health.

Eight one hour tai chi for seniors sessions are geared towards the senior(65+).Beginners of all ages will benefit from an hour of relaxation, breathing, and moving. Warm-up exercises gently work the body while relaxing the mind. Deep, diaphramatic breathing oxygenates the blood and stimulates a pleasant feeling of well-being. Joint rotation exercises help manage arthritis pain. New research shows Tai Chi class helps manage fibromyalgia pain. This tai chi class consists of ten simple movements. These tai chi movements are practiced during this seniors tai chi class for their ability to train balance, flexibility, and increase tolerance for exercise.

Program: One hour class is held weekly, Fridays 9:15-10:15 Canterbury Community Center. 8 Weeks

A person practicing in tai chi class moves her body in a slow, relaxed, and graceful series of movements. One can practice on one’s own or in a group. The movements make up what are called forms (or routines). Some movements are named for animals or birds, such as “White Crane Spreads Its Wings.” The simplest style uses 13 movements; more complex styles can have dozens. The term “tai chi” has been translated in various ways, such as “internal martial art,” “supreme ultimate boxing,” “boundless fist,” and “balance of the opposing forces of nature.” While accounts of the art’s history often differ, the most consistently important figure is a Taoist monk (and semi legendary figure) in 12th-century China named Chang San-Feng (or Zan Sanfeng).

Tai Chi Teacher Laddie Sacharko has been organizing and delivering tailored tai chi instruction in CT since 1998.

If you are considering or using any type of (Complementary or Alternative Medicine) CAM, talk to your health care provider about it. This is for your safety and a complete treatment plan.
